WhoSampled is an online community built up around music. Users come to the WhoSampled website to discuss music. The site focuses on reviewing, contemplating and enjoying music from its core. Users can access direct links from one song or musician to the next among 33,000 artists and 83,000 songs. WhoSampled gives users a way to trace music back through its roots by genre, essentially searching for the very DNA of the songs and musicians they love. Users can maintain their personal profile, connect with other users and add additional content to the Who Sampled data base. The site also provides users the ability to search for songs and artists alphabetically, by genre, by tag or by year. The homepage features latest submissions, top contributors and newest members to keep the community on top of recent additions and more.

WhoSampled was founded as a music discovery service in October of 2008. The site was intended to give users an extensive resource that would allow them to explore many genres of music. Today, many users visit WhoSampled regularly to discuss music and learn about new developments and discoveries within the user community.

There are many websites dedicated to celebrating music. What makes WhoSampled unique is the approach of finding the basis of the music the user loves. The site gives users a way to discover links to songs and musicians while connecting with other users. The user can also view who sampled a specific song or artist by reviewing the profile page for that entry.

The WhoSampled website uses a fun yellow, black and white color scheme with a stylish record logo worked into the application’s name. Although the website is well organized, it contains a few paid advertisements that can detract somewhat from the overall appearance. Most of these advertisements are relevant (though not all are), but they still pull some of the attention away from the content.

A new user can join the WhoSampled community by clicking on the blue “Sign Up” link at the top of the homepage. This directs the user to the short registration form. The form asks for an email address, password and password reminder word or phrase. A note at the bottom of the form advises the user that by submitting their information they are automatically agreeing to the WhoSampled terms and conditions.

WhoSampled is available to anyone for free. Visitors can search the site and read through the music related content without an account. Those who want to utilize all of the site’s features will have to create a free account. There are no subscription fees or other charges for doing so. This is definitely a plus because WhoSampled offers a great deal of information, but is primarily user driven. The user participates in discussions, submits new content and generally breathes life into the community. The site also includes paid advertisements which help cover the cost of operating as a free access site.

WhoSampled is a great resource for music fans. Users can discover new links and information about their favorite artists, song and genres. Others can submit resources that may not already be included in the WhoSampled data base.
